Analog signal to digital convertion?

Posted on Mar 31, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

Say an analog signal is converted to digital square wave signal using a threshold.
Can we reverse the process?
i.e. get back the original analog signal using the digital one? How?

Please explain in basics and give practical examples.

  1. Yes the process can be reversed, that is what those converter boxes for your cable television does before it goes to your analog TV.

Analogue to digital conversion is acheived by sampling. That is to take a measurement of the amplitude of an analogue signal and express it as a number in binary (ie digital) form.

To reconstruct the analogue signal, the digital samples are used to recreate the analogue signal in real time.

A practical example is telephony using pulse code modulation. (PCM) The speech in a telephone call is sampled at 8000 samples per second and the analogue value is converted to an eight bit digital number thus giving a 64000 bit per second digital signal. This is then assembled with 29 other channels (plus 1 signalling and 1 synch channel) to form a digital transmission speed of 2048 kilobits per second. This is then transmitted over digital transmission systems.

The distant end receives the digital signal and separates the 30 channels into 64Kbit/s channels and the 8 bit digital number is used to create a 1.25 microsecond pulse at the amplitude determined by it's value, thus recreating the analougue signal by doing this 8000 times a second.
