Digital Art?

Posted on Jun 24, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

I wish to practice the art of(dundununuuuun!)… digital art. I have had a useless graphic arts class for a year where we used photoshop and illustrator. I didn't learn much because the teacher was a failure who never taugh us or helped us. He just every once in a while printed an online tutorial off the internet. I can't draw. This is the kind of stuff I want to be able to do as a career.

ya but HOW do they do that sort of stuff? alot of digital art I've seen is very detailed and does not look like a drawn pic(tho may have been originally).

  1. I didn't see anything that can't be acheived in photoshop 6 much less cs3 ext.

heres a question you need to answer for yourself,
can I draw with a pencil and paper? Because if you can't draw with a perfectly shaped tool like a pencil…. then how will you draw with a mouse?

you can take photos and manipulate them and add effects and elements from other sources to come up with excellent photoshop work, whether you can draw or not.

depending on course outline graphic art is more to do with graphic design over fine art, and yes possibly teachers can appear not so interested at times, yet you are your own boss, when the project has to be done, illustrator is a good tool for creating perfect outlines, it does have gradient mesh tool and other unique features, photoshop is good with practice, but there are other more tablet-able programs, ☺

time and practice, you can draw on paper, but when transfered to computer, you would use tablet, painterX, and illustrator, and some with 3d imaging the touched up with painter,

  3. For the most part, you will HAVE to learn to draw. There is no software application in the world that can draw something for you.

The first image is a good example of that. While the artist may not be the best at drawing a female figure, he is, obviously, pretty good. And, whether he sketched the start of this image on paper, or created it, entirely, in a computer, HE still had to be the one to do the drawing in the first place. Perhaps the effects and the like were enhanced and added in Photoshop, it still took a reasonably good artist to lay it out.

The second and third images, by the way, look more line photographs manipulated in Photoshop. The background in the second is clearly photographic in nature, as is the clouds and bench in the third. I would bet money that the girl in the third one is also a photograph. Understand, that none of these elements had to be on the same photograph. In those cases, the artist skillfully combined the images and manipulated the effects quite masterfully.

In fact, this may be the direction YOU may want to pursue if you don't think you have the drawing skills. That time you thing was "wasted" in class may have taught you enough to be able to select various photographic images and combine them to create beautiful, original pieces of digital art.
