Digital Camera — memory card question?

Posted on Jul 28, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

What is the best type of memory card to get for a Canon digital camera? I see memory cards all over ebay, 1GB, 2GB… Does it matter what brand I get? Are they all pretty much the same..

How can I make sure the memory card I buy will work in the camera I have?

Do I have to buy a Canon memory card?? This is my first camera and I don't want too buy something too cheap, but I know if I go to Circuit City or Best Buy, I will be paying for a middle man (company).

I'd rather buy something online cheaper.

How many photos (4×6) will a 1GB hold? Thanks

  1. There are many different kinds of memory cards — such as SD, SDHC (which is the higher capacity version of SD), etc. Look at what your camera needs.

Within any of these types, you will find cards with different performance specifications. Unless the camera has specific performance requirements (rare), pick one that suits your needs and is supported by the camera.

Finally, there is the question of capacity. The storage per picture is determined by the settings that you choose, e.g. normal vs. fine JPEG, or RAW. Typically the range will be between 1MB to 10MB per photo depending on what you choose.

When you decide, you can buy the memory from a retail store like Circuit City or Fry's or from Amazon. Memory is pretty cheap these days.

it depends on how much you will use it, what the cam is for,
i would just go all out and get the 2GB
brands i don't worry about but compatibility to my computer

  3. No, it doesn't really matter. I have a Canon SD600 and I use a generic brand memory card-SanDisk 1.0GB and the pictures are great! I have taken over 100 pictures and a few videos. I am a scrapbook fanatic and so far I am happy with what I have. I save my pictures in my computer and I have several files saved at Flickr and Google in case I lose my own files. Have your pictures developed and delete the photos in your memory card so you'll keep using the same card over and over.

  4. Okay … before you buy any cards over the Internet, read this.

Besides … two packs of 2 GB cards were on sale this weekend for $20. After shipping and handling, my guess that cards purchased on eBay will cost more per GB

  5. The faster your memory card is, the faster the response your camera when you are shooting. The faster the memory card is, the more you have to pay for it. You can get a regular Sandisk to and Ultra 2 to Extreme 3, 4, and a Ducatti. Don't know if you are using SD or CF. Ultra 2 is pretty good all around card, and not so expensive. If you don't have to shoot really fast, then you can just get a regular Sandisk which you can get for about $14 for a 2 gb. Here's a site that has a table for how many photos per gb by mp:

They have Transcend which is cheaper than Sandisk, but I would rather get Sandisk - although, Transcend is not that bad. Be careful when you buy Sandisk so cheaply, it might be a Transcend with a Sandisk label (usually from China, but not always). Check Amazon or Dell or Circuit City which is not that much different.
