Can someone please tell me what it means when people say to use a hat to cover the lens when taking photos of fireworks? Wont it show it a hat in the picture? How would I take good long exposure photos of fireworks using just an olympus digital camera?

I am looking around for a camera that is going to work well as a present for my dad. He's really into being outside in the wilderness and stuff. Needless to say, I need a camera built like a tank. I also need it to be one of the best compact digital cameras I can get (finest picture quality). He is a bit of a perfectionist, so it really does have to take amazing pictures. I don't care about price right now - I just am gathering Data at the moment.
What is the best you all can think of?

I mean I know that the normal camera's need them but do the digital camera's need them? and if they do, can you erase the data (pictures) with your USB into your computer so that you can store more and you don't have to be buying negatives?
WOW thanks!! wait one more question, does the data card come with the camera or do you have to buy it separately?

About two weeks ago, my camera started making these lines and blocks over the top of the images taken with the camera. I have dropped the camera many times, but can't remember dropping it right before this started happening. Also, it does not do it to every picture and I have noticed if I shake the camera a little it will clear up and sometimes stay clear long enough for me to take a picture. I just want to know if there is something that I can do to fix it or if I should just buy a new camera. It is about two and a half years old. Thank you!!!
