if you do a search online, you may be surprised to find that many US online shops now give better prices than walk-in shops in SE Asia. Many of these will ship overseas (i.e. out of the US). So consider this as an option.
If you want to shop in Thailand, Singapore or KL, do your research back home first: list of desired models + prices. This will prevent you from being fleeced in SE Asia. May I warn you that the shops here will often entice you with a model you are not familiar with, and mark up the prices on you.
If you intend to shop in Singapore, a very safe place to buy your camera is Mustafa Centre (24/7 mega mall):

No bargaining, but their prices are competitive.
Else, consider Cathay Photo, Alan Photo or John 3:16 at Peninsula Plaza / Funan Centre. These are generally the respected shops among the photography community in Singapore.
