Data recovery is a lucrative market, and I’ve yet to see a free utility. What you’ll find are “free”downloads, but only for trial or demo versions.
Most of these will check for lost files, but then you’ll have to pay to actually recover anything.

Download the demo and run it. It will tell you if there are recoverable files. If there are, and you want them, then you pay $30 for the full version of the program.
This is one of the lower cost data recovery programs out there.
