Help in purchasing a digital camera?

Posted on Aug 29, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

I have never used a digital camera and am interested in purchasing one. Someone told me to get an 8 MP or higher. I want to keep to cost at $200 or less. Also, how does that memory card thing work? Do you need to purchase a memory card too? Does that last forever? I am behind in the times on digital cameras so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  1. it depends on what you want to do with the camera!!!

if its just normal, everyday snapshot of the family and kids activities, i don’t think you need to go much higher than 5MP. you can print these at an 8×10 size @ great quality.

some, if not all, cameras come with internal memory, meaning the pics are stored in the cameras memory. however, it is almost essential to have a memory card, since most people don’t upload their photos immediately after taking them. a memory card is like a little memory chip you insert into the camera. for example, i have a 5MP camera w/ a 1GB memory card. i can take 500-600 pictures @ best quality. i never run out of memory. i don’t see any reason why the memory card wouldn’t last as long or longer than the camera itself.

i would suggest going to a store and testing the camera out. check out the menu navigation, ask about internal memory, MPs, and ask about the shutter delay. some have a longer delay (the time between pushing the button and when the picture is actually taken) and this can cause you to miss “moments”

i have a kodak easy share camera and love it. however there are many other brands out there that are just as good. set your budget, decide what’s important, and take your time shopping…don’t let anyone pressure you into buying something you’re not sure you want…also ask about a return policy…if you buy one, take it home and REALLY hate it, you might can return it and get something that fits you better.

  2. best thing you can do is compare lots of cameras. select the features that you will use. compare them at dpreview.com

  3. Memory cards will last nearly forever … you will want to buy larger ones as the camera technology improves. Most serious shooters have at least a couple of 2GB cards in their pockets when out shooting.

$200 says a P&S camera and the higher the pixel count does not necessarily mean higher quality photos.

Look for cameras that use SD or SDHC cards, has at least a 3x optical zoom and IS (image stabilization) any other features will be just that much more frosting on the cake.

  4. VINTAGE MUSIC Says:

Fully automatic I suggest Canon PowerShot A560.
Now…Unless you're enlarging over 11X14 or cropping( blowing up a portion of the photo) you don't need more than 8 megapixels.
    6,7 MP is just fine.
    Important: features
Handle a camera at say Best Buy(no need to buy there). Check out the optical zoom of several cameras. Settle on one. Most are 3X, 4X optical zoom. Some are 6X. The rest are considered super zooms. 10X, 12X and higher. The more zoom, the more money.
A camera with an image stabilizer comes in handy for shaky hands. Results in less blurry photos. Buy a camera that has a viewfinder. Using only the LCD screen will eat up the batteries quickly.
One can buy a camera that's not all auto. Some have manual settings which can come in handy..shutter speed/aperture.
Buy more memory than you think you may need for a memory card.
It may seem like lots of money, but the value is there at Amazon.com
The Canon PowerShot A590 IS they have at about $145- shipping free.

  5. 8 MP is really good-that means you just have clearer and sharper pictures. i just got a nikon coolpix that was 10 mp and it was only $185-ish. the higher the mp, the clear/sharper the image. but honestly, you really don’t need more than 10. ten is, like, WAY more than enough. you can try looking for cameras on amazon.com-that’s where i got mine. they give it to you for less the price than if you were to buy it on a website by the company or in a store. mine is usually $229 or so and i got it for about 50 less.

As for the memory card, you have to buy it separate. Unless you get a special packet thingy, you have to buy it separate. Depending on the company your camera is from determines the card you can get. Each camera generally takes a certain card. For example, the nikon coolpix takes any card, so i can take any range of memory cards and stick them in there whereas an olympus camera only takes an xD picture cards. Yes, they last forever as long as they are taken care of. When your card gets full you can take the pictures off the card and set them into a file or something like that on your computer or usb drive thing (the instruction manual will probably help with that). 2GB will generally hold around 1,600-2,000 pictures. (at least that’s how much mine holds) the more memory, the better.

    I hope that helped. :D
