what is the best connections from a hd box to a sony dvr and plasma tv. all have hdmi, digital optical, new..?

Optical is for sound. HDMI is great picture it also delivers uncompressed sound.

Rolls my eyes and answers this question yet again after answering it just last night. Video comes in four formats. In order of quality they are HDMI, component, S-video, and composite. If your equipment is fairly new all you need is a few HDMI cables since HDMI can transmit both audio and video, both in digital. The other 3 formats are analog. Component splits the video into 3 parts and gives a picture almost as good as HDMI. S-video splits the video into 2 parts. And composite does not split the video at all carrying the full video on one wire.
If your equipment is older it may not support audio and video over HDMI. In that case use HDMI for picture and run digital audio cables for the audio. These could be either coax or fiber optic also called Toslink. They are both equally good.
