Stick with Nikon or Canon when looking for a DSLR. You will be guaranteed quality and longevity. Here’s a good list of the top 10 DSLRs on Amazon. Plenty of options there:
I have a Canon 30D, not the cheapest option, but I love it. Might be too much camera for some, and if so, I’d go with one of the Rebels on the above list.
In general, digital SLR cameras aren’t cheap, they are rather expensive. At least over four hundred dollars with a kit lens, providing that you want new equipment. Here’s a good digital SLR to start with, it’s the one that i’m currently starting with, here’s the link, also, this is the best place to buy cameras, and lenses etc:
The quality is amazing! The images are so clear, and you get a lot of detail in your photographs. I’ve used this camera for a few months, and it’s a real, light-weight camera, it’ll grow with you until you need a more advanced camera. This is a great camera.
Stick with the reputable dealers like http://adorama.com or http://bhphotovideo.com … you’ll get the best customer service and consistantly lower prices. They are the only dealers I use.
Amazon is a good place to start. Resellerratings.com has store ratings on some sites if you want to look them up before ordering from them. http://www.resellerratings.com/

Look at Pentax. They make a very nice camera, less expensive than either Nikon or Canon.
