ps3 hdmi or digital optical?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

which is a better set up for a PS3? Video via HDMI to TV and audio via digital optical to receiver. OR video and audio via HDMI to receiver, then HDMI from receiver to TV?

I want the best sound and video quality, but I kinda also want to be able to use the PS3 without having to use the receiver all the time, like when other people in the house are in bed. Id like to have the option to just use the TVs speakers without having to unplug the cables each time. so I’m thinking that the HDMI and digital optical is the best route. any suggestions?

  1. HDMI and optical are both digital connections so audio quality under most circumstances will be essentially identical. However, HDMI has broader bandwidth and can carry multiple channels (e.g. 7.1) while optical is limited to 5.1 sound. That said, for your purposes unless you are able to take advantage of loss-less audio and have a 7.1 speaker setup you can really use either approach.

That said, the ‘through the receiver’ approach is best, and you could simply keep the sound level down if you want to be quieter at night (and turn ‘off’ the ‘loudness’ switch)

  2. First of all HDMI and optical should give you pretty much the same audio quality for non-HD audio formats (the most common like Dolby Digital or DTS). However, if you are watching some bluray disc which has Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD (or any other HD audio format) the HDMI cable will give you better quality (assuming you have a receiver which can decode HD audio).

Now there are a few different ways you can accomplish what you want -
    1. Connect PS3 HDMI to Receiver and Receiver HDMI-OUT to the TV. Most receivers which have HDMI port support a setting whether to put the sound coming on the HDMI cable on the speakers or pass it through in the HDMI out. So whenever you want to use your tv speakers you just change this setting on the receiver.
    2. Connect the HDMI from PS3 to the receiver and the PS3 AV cable to the TV. You’ll need to change the setting on the PS3 to use the appropriate output everytime you want to transfer the sound from the receiver speakers to TV speakers and vice-versa.
    3. Get a 1-to-2 HDMI splitter and connect to both the receiver and TV (though be aware that there might be HDCP errors with this approach, you just have to try it to find out if it will work with your system).
    4. what you have described, i.e. HDMI from PS3 going directly to TV and using optical from PS3 to receiver.

Hopefully one of this works for you.
