TV changeover to Digital Feb. ‘09…?

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

I have a little portable TV/tape deck since 30 years — and now it will become a paperweight. Sure the ads all say “It’s SO much better!” But really, all the pocket liquid crystal portables will cease to work — and I’m quite happy as things are. Why is it “necessary” to eliminate the analog TV signal? It’s on FM bandwidth, right, so doesn’t interfere with, say microwave cellphone transmission. So why eliminate it?
Converter box for 2" hand-held TV???
VC: SOUNDS logical, but the 2nd paragraph reveals the problem. Aren't people who NEED emergency broadcast going to be better reached on VHF??? If their TV's don't work analog — what good will having the Emergency message come on a channel they no longer receive? Reminds me of Monty Python skit where they had a telephone that lit up "for the deaf". Only proiblem, the deaf person sees the light, picks up the phone, can't HEAR anything!

  1. Because the government is making billions of dollars selling new frequencies to broadcasters, and TV manufacturers are making billions selling TVs. It’s not necessary…it’s about politics and money, greed and corruption.

  2. I agree i think its stupid. But all you need to do is pick up one of those converter boxes which are around 40 bucks and come with a 40 dollar mail in rebate.
but regardless it still is stupid.

  3. Violation Challenged Says:

The Purpose for the change is to free up the 2 through 13 VHF frequency for use by EMERGENCY broadcasting. Presently these and other near frequencies ‘bleed over’ in to the existing assigned signals. This will also allow for a broader frequency range so as to unclutter the present users and provide more assignable band width for future emergency users.
The ability to communicate during emergency situations, be they fire, earthquake, hurricane, flood, tornado or acts of terrorism is crucial. the lives and well being of thousands to hundreds of thousands is a bit more important the the inconvenience of a couple of soap opera watchers…

  4. Because analog will be freed up for other uses and digital can track you anywhere, right from space,or your home and you are getting picture quality so you believe. If you have noticed you can’t even buy a tv that isn’t didigal unless you get it at a pawn shop.Progress, with a stinger.Like I told my vet,do I really want my dog traced from space? Not for a hundred dollar collar.Ok we will all get used to it and no one will even remember that some of us had reservations, about it.The part I hate giving up are the little gadgets that will no longer work. Now pocket tv was convenient, especially camping,in the rain.LOL.
