How could I make a 24″ by 18″ canvas digital?
Posted on Oct 30, 2008 under Digital news and reports |In my graphic design class, we have worked with 24″ by 18″ canvas using traditional art methods. I want scan these works and alter them with Photoshop but have run into a problem. My home scanner would be great if it could scan papers larger than 8.5″ by 11″, but it does not.
What methods could I use to get these into a digital copy?

It would be tedious and involve scanning different sections of the canvas. The taking those 8.5 x 11 scans and taking sectional scans that over lap. That way once you have the 3-4 scans that make up the whole image you can bring them into P.S. and put them back together as one image. OR you could take it to a printmaker and have them digitize the image for you ($$$, though).

How about taking a digital photo of it? Then use a photo program to manipulate digitally. You might call Kinko and see if they could scan it.

My desktop flatbed scanner won’t do an image larger then 8.5 inches by 14. So, I often have to scan the larger image in sections and then “stitch” the sections together in Photoshop.
Lets say that I have the larger image in four, separate scans. Each section should overlap the adjacent section by a bit.
In Photoshop, I open up a new image, four times the size of each individual scanned section. I open the scanned images, so a “select all” and then, in the new document, “place” it and move the section to the appropriate place on the new canvas. I repeat the process for the other three sections, “place”ing them on separate layers in the new document.
By carefully manuvering each layer, I can “mate” each piece so that, seen together, they appear to be one, single, large image. (playing with each layer’s transparency can help with matching up the overlapped areas)
When satisfied, the entire image can be flattened. However, I like to keep the layered image intact, and do a “save as” and flatten the copy. That way, if I find a problem on the larger image, with the correction, I can always go back to the layered version to make the necessary correction. In my experience, most often the problem is that the sections don’t align squarely with each other. Usually it is because the original wasn’t aligned squarely in the scanner when a section was scanned. Sometimes a slight adjustment by rotation is all that is needed to correct the problem.
