How do these converter boxes work for digital TV on an old black & white (B&W) TV on rabbit ears?

Posted on Nov 01, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

I also bought another converter box for an old B&W TV, which I picked up at a garage sale a few years ago, and I take it to my friend’s cabin, which is in Wood County, and it is in centreal Wisconsin. In previous years when I go there, I would bring along an old flat wire indoor antenna, which has a knob in the middle for fine tuning, and the stations come in great, and I have no indoor antenna. However, when I have the converter box, I need a new indoor antenna, which I can purchase at Radio Shack, (An employee showed me an indoor antenna that is suitable for the converter box) and it is about $40. But how will this old TV will work on a newer indoor antenna? Should I purchase a used set that uses the coax wires instead of the flat wires, and so I still need rabbit ears for this set with the new indoor antenna?

  1. There are things called "matching transformers" or "baluns" that convert twin lead ("flat wire") antenna connectors to and from coaxial. These are cheap and usually available where TVs & antennas are sold.

Digital & analog TV broadcasts use the same antennas, don't be in such a rush to buy a new antenna. If the old antenna gives you good analog reception, it will probably be OK for digital as well.

To attach your "flat wire" antenna to your converter box, just buy a balun like this one http://www.summitsource.com/75-300-ohm-pushon-quick-connect-matching-transformer-balun-75300-ohm-offair-tv-antenna-balum-coax-cable-female-signal-adapter-part-pervect-vision-pvba10-p-4896.html and attach the antenna leads to it to convert it to a coaxial connector.

If the VHF input on the TV is two screw terminals instead of coax, you need another balun http://www.summitsource.com/product_info.php?ref=1&products_id=6656

to change the coax output of the converter to screw terminals.

In North America, all TV antennas can be used with converter boxes. How good of an antenna you need is very dependent on the location that you are using it in.

They make adapters for going from the twin lead antennas to coax. I’ve found an article for you that has all the pictures and info you need. If you’ve already picked up a new indoor antenna, no you will not need the rabbit ears any longer. Good luck!
