Do you guys prefer an analog or a digital speedometer on a motorcycle?

Posted on Nov 02, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

I by far prefer the analog type. It’s easier to read especially when you accelerate rapidly. I also like being able to see my current speed in relation to the lower speeds that I came from or may need to decelerate down to and higher speeds that I may be looking to accelerate to.

With that said, it’s annoying to me how digitals are taking over above a certain purchase price. I’d like a digital kind IF it was laid out like an analog one except of course no actual needle moving but instead an LCD “needle”. I’ve seen tachometers for cars look like that where, instead of having a needle, it shows an arrangement of LCD bars to indicate RPMs.
Oh, I just did a search for the 2009 Ninja 650r. It now has a digital speedometer, yikes! Damn it, I guess I'll go with the previous generation, if I end up buying one. The digital bar-style tachometer the '09 features could be nice, though. Does anybody agree with me that progress isn't always a good thing? All too often, change is done for change's sake, not because it actually brings a benefit.
Ok, to clarify, when I say "digital" I mean the numerical LCD type and by "analog" I mean the mechanical type that uses a needle. :)

I myself prefer analog, especially if the sun glare hits it, you can’t see digital then.

this company sells a bar type LED tach that you set yourself.

  4. Good God, when will companies stop making those horrible digital speedometers?! You can’t read them in the sun, and if they are numerical displays, it’s nearly impossible to judge your speed unless you take your eyes completely off the road and read the numbers, which of course are constantly flickering to different numbers.

It seems like a novel idea with technology, but it’s so f-ing obvious that this is a bad idea. I don’t understand how an engineer could allow this to happen on a single model. I test drove a new Scion xB and when I saw that it had a digital speedo, I crossed it right off my invisible list. Even if it wasn’t a horrible ride, I would never be able to get over that stupid digital speedometer.

The needle tells you your speed, and also your rate of acceleration or deceleration. You don’t have to look at it; you can tell where it’s at and where it’s headed out of the corner of your eye!

  5. Analog for sure as it is easier to read.

  6. I ride a Gixer 1000K3 and prefer the analog. After riding your bike you should know what speeds you’re doing by the sound of the engine and not always looking at the speedo. Oh, yes, I’m 63 and a girlie !

  7. speedo and a tac who needs them

  8. Analog. I like my bikes old school. And in this case, old school is best.

  9. Analog :)

Just as you mentioned I find it easier to read and I like the classic looks of it…

Analog/Digital doesn’t mean what you think it does. You can have a digital speedometer that looks like a regular speedometer with the needle. They are more accurate and not prone to mechanical failure like the old style speedometers.
