How do I use an external microphone with my digital camcorder?
Posted on Nov 21, 2008 under Digital news and reports |I bought a digital camcorder (Panasonic HDC-HS9) and I would like to plug in an external microphone for various live music applications. How do I do this? The built-in mic isn’t the greatest at picking up the low-end frequencies. The user’s manual doesn’t say anything about external mics.
The only possible places I could see to plug in a mic would be in the A/V jack, but I think that’s an output jack, not an input. There’s also a “component” jack, but I don’t know what that’s for. It looks like a deformed USB port. It also has a separate USB port.
I’m actually a little mad at the Best Buy salesman (or should I say salesboy). He told me the the camera records in MPEG format. Well, it doesn’t. It records in some weird format which you have to download to your computer, then use special software to convert the files. You need twice as much memory as the file itself in order to even do the conversion, so my computer can’t even handle a file that’s only an hour long. The salesboy also told me I could plug in a microphone, but so far I don’t see how. Please help!
Could I use the HDMI jack somehow to plug in an external microphone?

That model doesn’t not have an external microphone jack.
I don’t know of any “real” camcorders that record in MPEG. Most non-HD cams record in .avi. Yours records in AVCHD, which is getting pretty common for high definition cameras. As for editing the video, you need a humongous hard drive. That’s just the way it is with a high definition camcorder, it takes a lot of memory to make those hi-def videos. Even standard definition cams use up a lot of hard drive space.
I will say this, the “salesboy” apparently had no clue what he was talking about.

The hdmi jack is only for output to a device like a computer to use an editing software like Vegas or Avid (those are professional brands) p.s. Vegas is better.
OR
to connect direct to a TV for viewing.
The camera you bought is a commercial consumer brand and does not support the connection of an external microphone, but unless you’re doing professional interviews, why need? Vegas software allows you to adjust all levels and channels of audio and video. If you want to return the camera and buy Professional or Broadcast level one, then they are expensive. I would recommend looking to buy a used Sony PD-170. They have been out for awhile (don’t get a PD-150) and you may be able to get a better price.
About recording in not matter, not what camera, you will need some type of software and the hard disk space to support your edits.
Camera: PD-170
Software: Adobe Premiere or Vegas
1 tera byte station.
but again this all goes back to what you’re using it for.
