Is the converter box unnecessary if you get a digital antenna?

I hate the satellite because it’s $60 a month and I only watch my local channels. Once our contract is up I want to get rid of it and put up an antenna. My bf says the box isn’t necessary as we would get a digital antenna. Is this true?

No. You would need the converter box. A “digital” antenna is no different from any other tv antenna. The word “digital” is used for hype. You would have to buy a tv with a digital tuner (atsc) in order to forgo the converter box.

The other responders have it exactly right and I’m only jumping in here because the “digital antenna” or “HDTV antenna” nonsense is so pervasive in advertising. A TV antenna is a TV antenna, period. You might need a better one for digital TV due to some of its technicalities, but you’ll need the converter with an analog set in any case. To avoid the converter, buy a new TV–in the U.S., they all now have digital tuners.

No, not true. You still need a convertor box.
At most a digital antenna is optimized to receive the new TV band after transition is complete, at least is is a UHF antenna to get transitional digital transmitters. They do not convert digital signal into analog, they are still just antennas.
