I just bought the Canon Powershot SD1100 IS so it’s a little different, but I really like it. The zoom is the same, so not that great. You can zoom in more after you take the picture (digital zoom), but the quality isn’t *quite* as good. The one I have has 8 megapixels as well along with color settings like Sepia, Black and White, and many others which comes in handy. You can also crop the picture right on the camera.
It depends on what you want. If you’re going to be taking a lot of far away shots, you want something with a higher zoom. From what I’ve heard (and believe me, I researched a lot before I bought a camera), the one I bought was one of the best. Just to be safe I bought the 3 year warranty along with it though.
It just depends on what you want. Once you figure that out, start looking for a camera that has what you want. Do research online.

The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 8.0 megapixel PowerShot SD1100[IS] with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for “Vivid” colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos under low light conditions. It’s especially good for low-light concerts. The macro feature is superb for taking closeups of small butterflies, insects, etc. It currently sells for $150 at fotoconnection.com:

I have a 3.8x/4x digital zoom (SD870IS - Canon) and it’s sufficient for me. I’ve used this camera for photo taking during travels and it manages to capture amazing pictures if you use the right mode in a Canon camera. I don’t usually use the digital zoom that often since it simply blows up your pictures on the pixels which reduces the picture qualities. When I look for a digital camera, I personally focus on flash and focus range, also on the weight and size of it, browsing online on the brand websites and compare different cameras also is of great help. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few choices, may be post it up here and see what other people say about them and may be some good recommendations. One of the newer Canon camera I’d recommend is SD880IS, i went to check it out the other day and it definitely is worth investing on. 10MP, wide-angle, 3x optical, 4x digital. For the price that they are being sold right now, it’s worth it. When the 870IS came out last year, it was selling for $350 minimum…
