What is HD TV and Digital Cable?

Posted on Nov 30, 2008 under Digital news and reports |

Hi. Right now I have basic cable from time warner. Please tell me if I am right.?? If I upgrade to digital cable, I get a box that sits on top of my tv,, it gives me more channels, (anything else)? Next question, if I dont upgrade to digital cable and my tv has a high dv tuner, does my tv still get dv? Maybe I am just confused about what all this crap is.. can someone please explain it it VERY simple terms for me? Thanks.
Holy crap.. i said simple terms please…. basics.

  1. More or less, if you get a cable box you will get more channels and an EPG, and interactive services such as VOD and PPV. You can also get DVR boxes.

There is no such thing as a high-def tuner, practically. A tuner is either analog (which implies SD), or digital (which does not imply definition). A digital tuner comes with a video decoder, which can be of the SD or HD variety.

That said, a TV with a digital tuner likely can tune unencrypted cable channels directly. An HD set with a digital tuner can also likely tune unencrypted HD cable channels. Some TVs may have a cablecard slot, which you can get a cablecard instead of a cable box (but will not get any interactive services.)
