um… need more details… sounds like you have an electric 1500 watt wall or baseboard heater.
If there is only 2 wires total then it's 120 volt rather than 240.
Home depot sells a digital thermostat for such an application for around 50 dollars.
Most of them can be used for either 240 or 120 volt. You just have to wire it slightly different for each. You have to make sure the t-stat is in a good position to read the ambient temperature of the room, and does not have the heat directly blowing on it, nor a frequently used door which would waft cold air towards it…
You haven't given a lot of information but here goes. Take a volt meter and test the circut to find out what voltage is being used (230 volt, 115 volt Base board heating, 24 volt furnace control). Im assuming that you only have the one thermostat in your house. Having just two (2) wires attached to it tells me that you only have cental heat (no air conditioning). To change your old thermostat to a new digital one should be very simple, but you will need to get the correct one. Buy the heat/cool type of thermostat (not the heat pump type) and be sure it has battery power (some run off power from the furnance) turn off the furnace either at the on/off switch by the furnace or at the furnace breaker in your main breaker panel. Remove the old thermostat. Screw the new thermostat back plate to the wallmaking sure it is level. Most digital thermosate have the wire atachment to this part ov the thermostat. Attach the two (2) wires one to the power (R) therminal and the other to the heat (W) terminal. Put the batteries into the main body of the thermostat (The display will come on) and snap the main body into the wall plate. Turn the power back on to the furnace. As always read the instructions to the thermostat first as each is a little different in application. Hope this helps.
