How do I put 8mm digital tapes on the computer?
Posted on Dec 29, 2008 under Digital news and reports |I need to know how to get the content from my 8mm video camera tapes to my computer and then to my hard drive. After I get the videos on the computer do I need it to be in the MPEG format or does it need to be changed to be put on my hard drive.

when you move them from your tapes to your computer they already go to your hard drive… that's where data is stored, unless you have an external.
Anyways, there are devices out there that you can connect a camera to. It's a slow process, but you can back it up. Some are as simple as a video card, some are external devices that plug into your PC. Go to any computer store, you should be able to find them

I suppose your vcam is a Digi-8. Check whether it has a firewire port or a usb port… firewire the better.

If it has, try this…
Connect your Digi-8 vcam to computer via firewire (or usb) to upload video thru video editing* or capture application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Most (digital) tape vcams have 4-pin ports; before cable purchase** check pc or mac for DV port {VCAM@4-pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6-pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop.

You may use the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.
It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.

You can do this with StashSpace.Com
They digitize your tapes and will put the files on a hard drive for you. It's usually $7 per hour tape for the transfer but they are running a holiday promo where the encoding it is FREE with a premium account.
