yes, but for best result the cable should be insulated.

If it is a video cable you can use it. Video cables usually have yellow markings on the RCA plug.
The SPDIF spec calls for a "75 ohm coaxial cable" - which is a video cable.
The Red/White audio cables are SOMETIMES made with 75 ohm coax, but sometimes not.

No the cables are not identical. However, I can not hear a difference. I am using standard audio cable for my digital audio send in one player. The other player has an optical send. I can't tell the difference between the two of them. Digital is digital. It doesn't really matter how it gets to the receiver. My system is worth about $3000 (low end but not garbage) and my hearing is excellent. I have been a musician for 30 years.
My suggestion is to try it with standard audio cables and if you're curious buy a digital audio cable and try it. Just make sure you can return it if you can't here a difference.
More on cables. I have a $5 component video cable, a $5 optical cable, and a $10 HDMI cable. My system works great. Don't waste your money on expensive cables! One of the magazines did a real double blind scientific test and listeners were unable to tell the difference between moderately priced cables and extremely expensive cables. Don't buy into the marketing bs that the shops try to lay on you. They love to sell expensive cables because they are high profit items. But you will NOT hear the difference. A cable is a hunk of wire and nothing more. So long as your cable runs are not extremely long go with moderately priced cables. The shop will tell you to spend 10% of your money just on interconnects. I believe it should be closer to 1% or even 0.5% for cables. Put the extra money into your speakers. The difference will be demonstrably better sound.
BTW the connection is from your DVD player to your receiver, not the other way around.
