Analog pass through digital converter boxes… ?
Posted on Feb 01, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I have an old portable DVD player that the DVD player doesn't work anymore… anyway… I want to hook it up to cable at my office. I have been using a digital converter box to get over the air but I want cable. If a pass-through will work I want to go buy one of those. Thanks.
Will a pass through digital converter box show analog cable channels? I have a portable dvd player I want to use as a tv in my office. I can get over the air channels on my dvd player with one that doesn't have the analog pass through.

I'm not sure I understand your question. A converter box with analog pass through will allow analog Over The Air signals to pass through the box without disconnecting it and will decode over the air digital TV. The boxes * will not * work with cable.
So, if you want to pass cable through the box, it probably would work, but then the box wouldn't see over the air and would be useless.
If your TV has Audio/Video inputs, you could connect the converter box to the TV with those. Then connect cable to the TV's "antenna in" connector. Of course, you would need an antenna connected to the converter box. Then you could switch between cable and over the air by changing inputs on your TV.
ADDITIONAL ANSWER: The converter boxes * will not * work with cable. Cable and Over The Air use two different systems. Cable would require a TV that could tune cable directly or a cable company box. The box won't tune analog anything, it will just let it "pass though" to the tuner in the TV / DVD recorder, etc.

To be able to watch cable, you need either a cable set-top box or TV tuner that support cable.
Get a cable TV tuner for your PC at work.
Portable DVD players or digital converters have no Cable Tuners.

a DTA convertor box will tune only digital broadcast TV, it will not tune cable, nor will it tune analog. Analog Pass Through passes the analog antenna to the TV tuner for it to tune. Being you have no tuner at all it will do no good.
You need to get a tuner that can tune cable signals and output A/V to your monitor.
