Long distance picture taking? Digital camera or binocular digital camera?
Posted on Feb 01, 2009 under Digital news and reports |So I want to get some kind of camera so i can take pictures from far away. I got to a lot of sporting events end usually sit near the front of the upper deck. I want to take pictures at the game. I know the binocular digital camera would be much cheaper than a high quality digital camera, but i dont really care about the price. im saving up for it. Would i be able to shoot nice pictures and print them 8X10 from so far away. Whats better binocular digital camera or an advanced digital camera? Would either be able to take pictures from that far?

Binoculars with cameras have very tiny sensors and you will be lucky to get photos larger than 4×6 inches.
Take a look at the cameras and lenses used by the pros shooting on the field. That will give you a clue… (PS, they use Nikon and Canon DSLR's with really long lenses)
If price is no object look at the Nikon D3 with a 200-400 mm lens. That will get you started for under $10,000
For 8×10 and 11×14 prints, a Nikon D40 with AF-S 70-300 mm VR zoom would be a good starting point … Less than $900.

a DSLR with a lens 400 to 800mm on a tripod. and you'll need good light. and about 4000 bucks

If you want Nikon, try the d40, or d60 with the 70-300mm VR. If you want Canon go for the Rebel XS/1000D, or the XSi/450D, with the 70-200mm F4L USM. either setup will run you about the same (the non IS F4L is not much more expensive than a Nikon 70-300mm, but the 300mm telephoto end is more useful for sports)
if you want something a bit higher up, get the Nikon d90, or d300, with the Nikkor 80-400mm. If that is a bit too expensive for your tastes, even though that Sigma is a third-party Manufacturer, all of my serious Macro work is done with their 150mm Macro HSM. I've never gotten a bad image out of any of their lenses.

If you're looking for 8×10's, a binocular camera probably won't give you clear crisp shots. If money is really no object, I'd look at a digital camera that allows for additional front end lens attachments. That way you can put on whatever lens is right for the distance you are at once you get there. If you do get the perfect picture, you may want to check out the wireless HD digital frames they sell at Ceiva. http://snurl.com/98odw
