Why does analog sound feel "warmer" than digital?

Posted on Feb 23, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I am one of those many people who find that an LP sounds much "warmer" than a CD. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it feels less sterile and fills the room better.

What actually causes this? I mean this more at a technical level … are certain frequencies emphasized more in analog? Is it that the LP can't reproduce the highs properly, and that's what makes it sound better to me?

Put another way: suppose I have a digital track from a CD, and wanted to make it sound more LP-like. What kinds of tweaks would have to be done to it?

As an aside, I find that my CD copy of "Back in Black" (AC/DC) has a lot of the same warmth that an LP has … it's one of my favorite things to listen to because it sounds so good. I wonder if it's the same answer, that whatever's happening in an LP is also happening in that disc.

First, I don't have your extremely technical answer. However, I looked this up once and found that it's because your LPs are lossless, basically any sound recorded onto it, was a sound that was generated where it was recorded originally. Digital media forms are now automatically ridding themselves of "imperfections" and keeping only the sounds that are being recorded onto them (i.e. instruments) and even then edited further. Basically, it's a question of taste, but an LP has every sound etched in as ridges and bumps, while CDs and MP3 have eliminated many of these background sounds.

  2. I too like the sound of lp's better. I can't explain why but I will try to explain why "Back in Black" has that "warm" sound to it. Albums like "Back in Black" were recorded with analog equipment and then when CD's came about they were made from the old analog recordings. Nowadays music is recorded digitally so the CD's do not have the limitations that the old analog recordings have. That's why we see albums that have been on CD re-released as digitally re-mastered. I'm not sure if they sound all that much better though.
