What is the best digital camera to buy for a photographer?

Posted on Feb 24, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I am looking to get into photography as a way of making some extra money. I'm looking for advice on which digital camera to purchase to start out with. I want a really good professional one but my budget is under $300. Anyone know of any?

    go for nikon D700

i am using nikons for 6 years now and by far the best

but if u want to upgrade Ur cameras firmware year after year then u can go for olympus………….its also good

  2. There are no professional cameras anywhere near your budget. Pro models cost 10-15 times your budget just for the body. Add a few more thousand for a lens or two.

Before you even consider doing any paid work you need to know how to use a DSLR. I don't mean just putting it on auto and pressing the button. It doesn't work like that. Professional work requires a complete understanding of how the camera works and what equipment you need for the job. For any job you need to know what lenses, flashes, other lighting equipment etc that will be required.

For your budget you wont find much other than either a point and shoot or a used DSLR or 35mm film SLR. A point and shoot would be completely unacceptable for professional work. You need an SLR.

  3. hahahahaha…under $300…..hahahahahahahahaha

  4. it isn't so much the camera as the shooter,
composition and setting and lighting are important aspects.
you can get a decent dslr with 2 kit lenses for about 700 dollars maybe less (my olympus e-500 cost that new a few years ago)
the lenses are what's gonna eat your lunch, the camera body can be bought for well under a thousand to several thousand (depending on what bells and whistles you want…)

  5. ok, to a point the people that responded before me were right. its going to be very hard to find a camera for that price. you need about $200 more to find a decent used one. and really, its all about location. i dont know where your located. so where i live i can scour craigslist.org for all my photography needs for CHEAP. and i can post to get photography business. so my resource is craigslist.org.
good luck…ill link you to a couple of cameras in my area and show you what to buy but most likely you wont be in my area. good luck!!!!

  6. Practically Prudent Says:

You can get a d40/d40x and lens (both refurbished) for around 300-450. You need to get active and scour your local adds or camera clubs. For your level you really don't need something as grand as the d700, though if you can swing the money and have the patience go for it. The d40 and d40x are very capable of taking some amazing photos, it just falls back on you to know how to setup the camera and have the eye for the shots.

Don't be too discouraged by the nay sayers, you can do it if you try hard enough. I'm not familiar with the film models, but those are also a viable option. Good luck.

    –edit–
Nay saying with regards to the purchase amount and laughing at the request. Sure "best" camera falls under one of those laughed at questions, but you can get dslrs (obviously not new and legit) for that price. The person that is clueless about cameras usually doesn't need to spend thousands on their first.

Thumbs downs are always nice, bring them on. Getting them for telling people to not be disheartened by the bluntness of others is fine. My info isn't wrong, I could give a rat's bum. Obviously knowledge and skills, a good teacher and time are invaluable resources, but the question was a professional camera for low dollar. The entry Nikon's or Canon's in the right hands are professional equipment.

  7. Spend your money on education!!!

If you are wanting to take pictures for money, then you really need to know what you are doing. A professional knows what equipment they need before they buy it.

I'm not being a nay sayer and neither are the others that posted similar answers to mine. They are being truthful.

  8. If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

    http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing at concerts; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $320 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

$300.??? (That's three, zero, zero, decimal point??) I'm not even sure you can buy a lens for that much anymore. You better start thinking seriously about the money before you decide you want to be a photographer. Photography is NOTTTTT a cheap "hobby". My Canon equipment ALONE cost me $8,000. for the cameras and lenses alone. I also have AT LEAST that much invested in my computer, software, tripods, studio lights, back drops and other accessories.
