Does the digital tv converter give you a better picture?

Posted on Mar 30, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I only have an antenna hooked up to my tv right now ( way to poor for cable) and the stations all come in fuzzy( and NO FOX, NO AMERICAN IDOL, very sad). I was wondering if I will get a better reception on my channels.

Yes. But you have to have the antenna in the right place or nothing comes in well. Try a different place in the room or a different room altogether. A different antenna may help.

Do you mean like a Digital TV box? If you do, then it may improve the signal. But, they have to be connected to an antenna like anything else, so you may end up with an even worse signal than before.

I would recommend getting a signal booster - they can be bought fairly cheap but may greatly improve your picture quality. An example can be found here - http://www.rapidonline.com/Electrical-Power/PA-Audio-Video/Aerials-Accessories/1-way-Aerial-amplifier/72423/kw/35-3665?source=googleps&utm_source=googleps

A signal booster will work with anything using an antenna of any kind.

    Hope this helps,

    Tom.

  3. Well, you won't get fuzzy reception. The problem is that if you get fuzzy analog reception, it's likely that you will get an unacceptable amount of break ups with digital reception if you use the same antenna.

Indoor antennas are very sensitive to location. It wouldn't hurt to get a lenght of coax and see if you can find an analog "sweet spot" before trying to set up a converter box with your current antenna.

The only way to really tell is to hook up a converter box and see for yourself. If you haven't signed up for your coupons, do it now at http://www.dtv2009.gov

There is a handy web site (http://www.tvfool.com) where you can find info about your local TV transmitters. I put in zip code 70458 and found the following.

–The local FOX station appears to be only transmitting in digital. Channel 8.1 on "real" channel 8 at 203 deg-20 miles away.

–You need directional antenna that receives both VHF-high (channel 8) and UHF.

20 - 25 miles from the transmitters is kind of marginal for an indoor antenna. While you waiting on your converter, it wouldn't hurt to ask neighbors what kind of antenna they have had luck with. If you have access to an attic you might think about putting a small outdoor antenna there.

Some converters are better at picking up marginal signals than others. I suggest looking for a Zenith, Insignia, or Channel Master model.

There is a lot of BS in the marketing of TV antennas. One thing that is useless is whether an antenna is labeled "digital", "HD", "HDTV", or some other buzzword. Any sales person that doesn't know what "VHF-high" means doesn't know enough about TV antennas for you to waste your time talking to him/her.
