Connecting my camera to my PC (Fuji Film FinePix J10 8-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black)?

I have installed the finepix program and I plug in my camera. Booklets say it should automatically should detect the camera, but nothing happens.

Computer: Mac OS X
Program: FinePix Viewer

Okay, I'm not a Mac user, I'm a PC. But I will give what help I can!
For starters, I never install camera software. Windows, and I assume OSX, will recognise the device regardless of whether or not you have installed the software. It will simply see it as a USB external disk, you can access your photos as if they were on a memory stick.
If you have installed the software because you feel you need it, and nothing happens when it is plugged in there are two potential reasons for this. For one, I have found that for best results you should plug the camera in when it is switched off, then turn it on. I don't understand why, but this seems to make a difference! For two, you may have Autorun disabled, it could simply be a case of opening "My Computer" and you will see your camera there.
Obviously, all this is based on my Windows experience - it's been a long time since I used an Amiga/Mac!

I use both Mac and PC and I test a lot of cameras - with each I connect without using the camera software. I use a card reader or the camera USB and in each case the computer sees the camera as an external drive. You should be able to do the same.
