I have a Nikon D200 and it has always served me well… I am not paparazzi… but the best in that line is the Nikon D300 and I would think that any paparazzi would be more than well equiped with either of these.
I went to a couple of movie premieres to get some celebrity photos. I can't say much for Nikons (since I can't spot them on sight), but the Canon folks tended to have 1D series cameras - you know the 8-10 frames per second monsters.
Lenses were L lenses - 70-200 2.8L IS and 300mm 4L IS was typical. Most have Speedlight to the side. Pretty lousy photos from what I saw. I was shooting available light to avoid that "flash look"
A friend's friend is a professional Pap, and I think he mentioned he was using a 500 or 600mm on a boat to get pictures of Brad Pitt's last wedding. He uses a couple of 1D mk III.
Paps tend to use top range DSLR's such as Canon or Nikon.
They need robust cameras with fast motor drives.
"elite" types??? If you mean top range then Hasselblad probably have the best reputation.
In 35mm type Dslrs then Nikon and Canon hi-end like the Nikon d3/D3x or Canon EOS 1ds or 5d are considered the best (elite)
