Backup of Digital Pictures when Traveling?

Posted on Apr 21, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I don't have a laptop to travel with. I would like to be able to economically backup my pictures when traveling from my Compact Flash 2GB memory card.

I could buy another card, but if a memory card fails or is damaged, I can lose all the pictures on it.

I would like to spend the minimum, say less than $75. Any suggestions?
All suggestions are excellent. I already have a card reader, so I could go with the CD backup easily. Not expecting to be able to visit those places, so a portable storage device seems the best answer.

Yesterday I asked a pro what he does, and he uses the portable drive option. He has an extra, and offered it to me. It is a Epson P-2000, 40GB with 3.8 in. LCD, like new, all accessories. I am testing it out now, and probably will get it from him at a good price. Thanks to all of you.

It depends on where you are traveling to. If it's possible, you could always pop into a camera store, hand over the memory card and get the images put onto CD, then post the CD back home or just keep it in your suitcase/backpack. Or you could then take the CD to an internet cafe and upload them to something like Flickr?.

If you are traveling in some god forsaken rain forest, then these options may not be possible. Although I will be honest and say that going traveling with just one 2GB card is not a very clever thing. You should always carry a back up, what if this one fails and you can not take any pics for the entire trip?. 2GB is nothing!, I could fill that in a few hours, buy another larger card.

  2. To add to the answer above, there are a couple options. If you think you will be able to get access to a computer, you can buy a small portable CF card reader that you can just pop into a USB port. Then you can transfer the files to an online storage site if you have one.

    Something like this http://verbatim.com/products/detail.cfm?product_id=AB497631-1143-3415-5F2923D96951A96A&cat_id=D886E372-1143-3415-5FE793174E329965.

If you do not think you will have access to a computer - there are harddrive back up devices you can buy but they will run you about $99 or more. A cool option though. Something like this: http://www.hyperdrive.com/HyperDrive-SPACE-s/1.htm

I do not have experience with either product I've linked to, they were just examples.

  3. U probably cannot backup for less than $75. Your best bet in that price range is to simply buy more memory cards, as U already have figured out.

Portable hard drives and portable CD burners cost hundreds.

The most effective and least expensive option would be a modern "netbook" with USB ports and a USB card reader. The Acer Aspire One comes (in one version) with a 120 GB hard drive for around $280.

U could try a used notebook computer, but for under $75, the hard drives will likely be too small for a 2 GB card.

Last option: a used or older Archos Gmini 400. 20GB size, has a built in CF card reader (don't get the Gmini 402, which dumped the CF card reader). If U can find one, it should be under $100 these days (although people can and do charge more for it). It's what I used to use to backup, until I got a netbook and external hard drive.

  4. Memory is cheap. Buy several more cards and problem solved. I have several gigs of memory for two different cameras (in two different formats), but if I run short on vacation, I find a photo lab and burn CD's, usually for just a few dollars. I always check the CD to make sure the images are on-board before formatting the card. Unless you are traveling in remote areas, making CD's at a local lab is probably your cheapest option. OTOH, 2 GB CF cards start at about $7.00 on Amazon. Buy a name brand card from a reliable retailer (NOT ebay!) Test it before you leave. The failure rate is very low. Much more common is operator error in storing and accidentally deleting files.
