The D40 and D60 are similar and both are limited in the lenses they can use. I believe this is because they don't have an autofocus motor inside the camera. Instead, the lens provides the autofocus motor. As a result, many older excellent quality Nikon auto focus lenses won't auto focus on a D40 or D60. Most Nikon Digital SLRs can use any Nikon auto focus lens made in the past 30 years. Nikon auto focus lenses and digital SLR bodies often sell used at very good prices. A used D200 in excellent condition may sell for less than half of what it cost new 2 years ago.
The latest thing in Nikon digital SLRs is the ability to get much better results at high ISO settings in low light. If you can afford it, check out the D90, D300 or D3, all of which have excellent low light performance. - I think the D90 would be particularly appropriate for journalism use.
There plenty of options now when considering getting an DSLR. A big thing to consider is budget. If you just want to get a camera for the class and not expecting to continue learning photography after. I would say get the d40 because is cheaper and will do the job. If you are actually interested in photography and will like to learn more about it, I will get say spend a few more hundred dollars and get the d90. As a general rule for electronics always buy the most you can afford. New models will come after anyway, is inevitable.
I own a d70 which today any new dslr from nikon is better as far as megapixels and stuff, today the d90 is the upgrade of the d80 which was the upgrade of the d70. but i paid more than what the d90 retails for now.
hope this help….

If you are going to do this for a living get the d60 but if it is more of something you might not be doing as a job then get the d40
