Speaking ISO, what is best to have in a digital camera?

Posted on Apr 24, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I want to know what types of ISO are best to look out for when buying a new digital camera. Should it have a high ISO? Should there be many ISO settings? Etc.

Having a high ISO is not all that matters, I usually shoot with my D300 and it goes up to 1600 ISO, but it has so much noise that I cant really shoot it past 500 ISO. the D700 has the best over all.

  2. Just having the ability to shoot at high ISO does not mean it does a good job of it. Read reviews of the cameras to see how well they handle high ISO. As a general rule of thumb most point and shoot cameras do not handle high iso very well. In fact most cannot handle more than about ISO400 very well. There are a few exceptions (Fuji for example has a novel sensor that helps with high ISO). dSLRs do a better job but high ISO means more noise.

ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor. To get higher ISO values, there is always an increase in noise. Most of the time with my dSLR I shoot at ISO 100, 200 or 400, but I have been in many situations where I had to use 800 or 1600 because I was not allowed to use a flash for example and I would say you can get pretty good pictures with it as long as you do not intend to blow them up very large. If it is a matter of having a noisy picture or no picture at all - I'll take the noise and live with it (unless I am using my point and shoot which at ISO800 is abysmal).

  3. I have the D700 and I have to say the HIGH ISO performance is amazing!

  4. High ISO is only useful if the camera performs well at high isos.

ISO is essentially the rating of how sensitive the film/sensor is to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive; allowing faster shutter speeds and/or slower f-stops. However, the trade-off is that image quality also decreases at these higher values. You will find that your images may be very grainy, soft, and/or discoloured.

Many compact cameras advertise themselves as "blur-free" via "high iso technology". In truth, these cameras perform very poorly at these high isos, the image degration is too much for even normal sized prints. What you want is a "dslr", which performs much better at these higher values.

So in the end, how a camera performs at these crazy high iso settings is more important than how high the iso itself goes up to. Dpreview is a great site to get recommendations and reviews on the latest (and the oldest) digital cameras: http://dpreview.com/
