Many Digital TV programs are broadcast with multi-channel audio (Dolby Digital 5.1).
If you have an AV receiver with digital audio inputs, you connect the TV to the receiver and then you can listen to multi-channel audio (instead of stereo via your TV's speakers).

It is for connection to a surround system.
On most sets, it only sends digital surround from the built in digital tuner. Other inputs will be down mixed to stereo.
