What's a long-term way to backup digital photos?
Posted on Apr 29, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I have a lot of digital photos on my computer that currently aren't backed up. Originally I was gonna burn some copies onto a CD-R, but I've heard that over time CD-R's degrade. So now I'm thinking about just buying a couple of USB flash drives for storing pictures. Can anyone think of a better long-term way to back pictures up, or should i just go with the flash drives?

flash drives are a good idea.
they are pretty inexpensive

What did you hear about the CD-R's degrading?
If 25 years is not a good answer, you can buy special CD and DVD discs that have a 100 year guarantee.
Some suggest you use an external hard drive to archive all your image files, but there are really only two kind of hard drives: Ones that have failed and ones that are about to fail.
If you are really concerned about your images, you can make fresh CD or DVD copies every 15 to 20 years (technology will have advanced by that time and you will have to be upgrading all your archived image files to the new medium in any case).
Buying a bunch of flash drives to archive the over 1.5 TB of images I have shot over the past nine years using a DSLR, would become prohibitive and cataloging them nearly impossible.
I would suggest you use DVD's since most of us use memory cards that are over 1 gb, so one 700 mb CD-R will not even hold one card worth of images

I save all my pics to an external hard drive, then I back them up to DVD. The problem I see with flash drives, is you wouldn't have a way to label them and if you need to find a picture it would be more of a search. Flash drives can fail too.
