I need a new, affordable digital camera…any suggestions?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 19 Comments

I have a samsung s630 which has been having a lot of problems lately, so I really need to buy a new one, but I'm not even sure where to start.
I'd like to stay right around $200, but can go slightly higher if it's worth it. I don't need anything super fancy, but i do like to have some extra features (I love playing with colors and tones, ideally I would find one that picks out one color and makes the rest black and white…not sure what that's called). I want to keep it small and fairly compact also.
Any suggestions for what the best camera out there is that meets my "requirements" ? I'd like to stay away from Kodaks, and I'm mainly interested in Canon's…but i'll take any advice! Thanks!!
The camera I have now only has 6.0 Mega Pixels, a 2.5" LCD and it has ASR (which i've really liked).
I'm ok with less MP's but I still want to take quick, quality photos.
Oh, and… I already have 2 micro SD cards ( a 4gig and a 2gig), so I'd like to use them in my new camera also :)

How do you program digital cable boxes?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 17 Comments

I own a private cable system and I want to give my subscribers digital. I am using QAM to send them the channels if they have a digital tuner in their TV, but I'd like to use the Motorola DCH3416 to provide an interactive guide and DVR. Where do I start?

Transferring old 8mm film / file types for digital format (PC/Win)?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 15 Comments

I am getting some (old - very old) 8mm film transferred to digital - would like to get this in a digital format that I can ultimately do minor editing but also preserve uncompressed format.

I use Windows/PC - this is the response from vendor … "We can transfer to digital file in either hd or sd. For mac user this is seemless and we provide .MOVs. For PC users it is hit and miss…more so hit with SD files and more so miss with HD files. Normally we provided AVIs for PC users and believe it or not the codec we have had the best luck with for compatibility is motion jpeg with HD. For PC users we do not guarantee that the files play on their PC and do not want to be left responsible for figuring out DV issues. With DV it's the wild west and it's all a huge mess right now. If you are comfortable and have no issues with converting .MOVs to something your PC can play I'd definitely recommend this approach especially if you want HD.

Any suggestions on getting this in a format that I can utilize/edit on PC/Windows - is it good to get in .MOV format?

Help me! Thanks for your ideas, feedback & suggestions!!

Will a digital converter box and antenna allow me to view the new digital signals over the air?

I have an old tv and want to receive the free antenna channels the major networks provide without getting the cable companies involved.
Would this work?
thank you

Digital Camera for less than 200-so many choices?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 30 Comments

I want to buy a digital camera, I do not want to spend more than $200.00-Researching online, I have come up with the following: 4 pixels is fine for regular size photos. You need more than 4 pixels for larger photos, which I probably won't do anyway. The higher ISO the more grainy the pics are, what the heck is an ISO? DSLR-digital lens reflux is best, it captures moving photos, easier to use and better pics. Optical zoom is best, because digital zoom gets poor images. Also something with continuous frame, so you don't want to wait forever between taking pics. Oh and you want image stabilization, whatever that means, ha ha! Also, i do not want to deal with the AA batteries anymore. So any suggestions, thoughts, links would be so great!!

How can I make my digital converter box work again?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 19 Comments

I have a digital converter box for my regular TV, and it has worked exactly as it should, until yesterday. I pushed the button to turn it on from being on standby, but it turned off instead. Now, I can't get it to go back to standby or turn on. Well, it will go to standby if I uplug it and plug it back in. Any suggestions?

Digital Cameras..help please?

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 under Digital news and reports | 18 Comments

I'm not a camera expert, I'm more into computers, so between these cameras which are the best.
Because I can't pick I just look at the basic info.

I don't care about the price, I just need to know which one is the best.
