Point and Shoot Digital Camera or DSLR Camera?

Posted on May 26, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I need a new camera but I can't decide which I should get. I like photography but I don't want to pursue it as a business. If i get a DSLR camera it would be an entry level camera like the nikon d60 or canon xsi.
I dont have a budget

  1. I take about 1000 piks a year(print them) and I am happy with the Kodak cameras…………..simple, cheap and not DSLR.
I have a nikon ..real camera and never take it out…….the little Kodaks are enough….they also have a photoshop type enhancement(not near as complete) which works great

  2. For under $450 you can buy an entry level camera.

Spending money on a new P&S camera will just put buying a DSLR further away. Maybe waiting and saving for a few more months, would be a better idea.

Don't let pixel counts disturb you.

  3. You have to choose between control or movies.

PaS will let you take movies (for the most part) and take a bunch of small pictures. However, you can't control the images very well and you usually end up with washed out faces or out of focus shots.

DSLR, however, lets you change what you're focusing on in the picture and control how the picture looks, to an extent. But, you lose the movie function. And it's much more in the long run, even if it is just a hobby, for new lenses and external flashes and everything you'd need to make it worthwhile.

I have both a Canon Powershot (I'm not sure which one; it's got a lovely jumble of letters and numbers by which you're supposed to be able to identify it) and an XTi. I love them both, but it gets to be a pain to lug around the DSLR anytime I want to take a picture. However, it also sucks to see what would be a really cool shot and not be able to capture it because you only have a PaS.

I'd go with the PaS because it's safer. And if you're not really gung-ho about photography, you'll end up resenting the bigger DSLR because you don't want to have to carry it around for just everyday picture taking.

  4. I get this a lot the reason I recommend slr camera is if you want better pictures(Period), Action sports, If you have kids, OR if you want to have more options on lenses. If you want to take pictures of anyone doing anything moving you want an slr camera just because you can change the shutter speed. If you have kids they most likely they will play sports also slr cameras have faster turn on speeds. If you want to do anything creative with your camera you get more things out of a slr camera. You can add flash to make more professional pictures also.

The main reason I recommend point and shoots is because of the size a lot of people do not want to carry around a big body camera or do not want to change lenses.

    My recommendation for each

DSLR: Nikon d40 or Nikon d5000 the d5000 has live view which is nice.

Point and shoot: Canon g10 or Canon SX110IS

  5. what you need is quality good enough in point and shoot, that make you able to choose that over SLR, right?

i would suggest to look into Fujifilm F100fd or F200EXR.
i have this for about 300USD and two of my friends bought it too after seeing the results. 12megapixel, 5 optical zoom, iso up to 12800.

and this is comparing the Fuji 30 to Nikon DSLR

as you can see later on the conclusion page,
the review sites amazing results up to par with DSLR.

So, if you want to not buy DSLR, I suggest you buy Fujifilm F100 or F200 new one.

if you do decide to buy DSLR, i suggest Sony or Pentax, they have anti shake on their body, so you dont have to buy expensive lenses to have the feature.

    Good Luck! :))

  6. I recommend Canon xsi
12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor captures enough detail for poster-size, photo-quality prints
    Large 3.0-inch LCD display; includes Canon's EF-S 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens
DIGIC III image processor provides fast, accurate image processing; improved Autofocus and framing rate
EOS Integrated Cleaning system, plus Dust Delete Data Detection in included software
Stores images on SD/SDHC memory cards
