Yes, you can, however you need to convert the itunes digital copy with itunes, cause itunes movies are in 720p, iPod can play videos up to 480p.
after you download the video to your itunes library, locate the video and choose "advance" "create iPod/iPhone versions" in the menu, itunes will convert the video to iPod compatible format.
