There is a significant difference. Optical zoom means that lenses are being used to zoom in on the object. With digital zoom all that is happening is that the image is being converted to a larger size. Digital zoom is the eqivalent of taking a picture and then using software to blow it up. Generally digital zoom is highly inferior to optical zoom - and the loss of quality and sharpness in the image is very pronounced.
I personally never use digital zoom.

*Optical is zooming in to the object with the same quality as if there was no zoom.
*Digital means it zooms, but the quality of the picture is degraded.
*Look for cameras with optical zoom.
*The more the Optical Zoom, The better

Optical zoom is when the camera uses the lenses to zoom into the scene and use the full sensor, but digital zoom is when the camera magnifies what is on the center of the sensor and smooths it out. Most cameras save it as a full resolution image, but it is just stretched and smoothed
