I have a 19" lcd tv with a digital ntsc tuner do I need a converter box or just antenna to watch over the air?
Posted on May 31, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I have a 19" polaroid lcd with a digital tuner that is NTSC tuner - I am trying cut back on expenses and this tv is in a guest bedroom and would like to dump the fios stb on this and my kitchen tv (a sharp hd lcd tv) which has an atsc tuner - from what I have read I bellieve I only need an antenna for the atsc tuner but do I need a converter box for the one with the ntsc tuner

A NTSC tuner is not a digital tuner. It is an analog one.

If it has only an NTSC tuner, then you need a converter box to receive over the air broadcasts. ATSC is the name of the digital tuner.

The easies way to tell if you need a STB is to unplug your box and reprogram your tv. If you get what you want then no you don't need a box

NTSC is an analog tuner and will require a converter box.
The ATSC (Advanced Television System Committee) digital tuner doesn't need a box.
You will however, need antennas for both TV's that you have.
