  1. Formatting of the drive!

  2. when they say "1TB" they mean one trillion bytes. For a computer, however, 1TB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Its simple advertising vs reality. You never received the full TB.

    * According to the SI standard usage, 1 terabyte (TB) equals 1000000000000bytes = 1000^4 or 10^12 bytes.
    * Using the traditional binary interpretation, a terabyte is 1099511627776bytes = 1024^4 or 2^40 bytes = 1 tebibyte (TiB).

    The capacities of computer storage devices are typically specified using their standard SI values, but many operating systems and applications report in binary-based values.

  3. This is a common issue among hard drives. It is not purely because of formatting, though the process of partitioning and formatting does take up a little space.

    The main problem is the difference between how a hard drive manufacturer calculates a terabyte and how the computer calculates a Terabyte.

    The drive manufacturer calculates 1 Terabyte as being 1,000,000,000,000 Bytes, whereas the computer calculates a Terabyte as 1,099,511,627,776 Bytes.

    Because of the way computers are designed, and their Binary numbering system, everything has to be able to match well when converting from a base-10 numbering (like we use normally) and the Base-2 or Binary system computers use.

    So, when you get a Terabyte, you are missing the 99,511,627,776 bytes that is the difference between the two. That comes out to be about [99,511,627,776 / 1,073,741,824(1Gb) = 92Gb

    Johnny you are completely wrong. sorry. the 80gb is from where the manufacturer of the drive estimates the value of a gigabyte to 1000 mb when it is really 1024mb so all those 24s add up and eventually turn into 80gb that isnt really there. =P hope i helped.
