What is a good beginner Digital SLR camera?
Posted on Jun 21, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I love photography & taking many pictures and also editing them on computer software. I only have had digital point-and-shoot cameras, the quality of the pictures are really bad. I really want to upgrade and experience using a Digital SLR camera. I don't really know much about them, and was wondering what a good beginner one would be? Im only 16 so my budget is kind of tight so I would be looking for something on the cheaper side. Could anyone recommend something & where to buy it.
Thanks ![]()

The important thing to remember about SLRs is that they have widely varying prices. They start in the hundreds but can cost several thousand dollars.
For casual and amateur photographers, newer point-and-shoot cameras actually get pretty good pictures. I have an Olympus Stylus with 10 MP that cost about $200, and it produces great images.
SLRs generally provide more creative control, faster shutter speeds, longer zooms lenses, and (depending on the cost and MP) better images.
The Canon EOS Digital Rebel line starts below $1000, but I have never used one. I have a Canon EOS 30D, which cost about $1400 dollars. It has 8MP and 3 fps, so it gets quality photos and can stop action. I would highly recommend it, if the price is not too high.
I have also used the Nikon D80, which is a bit less expensive. While the image quality was good, I found the Canon to be better for me as a beginner, because its automatic features were easier to use. The Nikon was a great camera, but I simply did not have the expertise to use it to its fullest potential.
As for where to buy, we buy our cameras at Best Buy. I would prefer to support local camera stores, but they are usually more expensive.
