How do I get a Soft Focus on my pics with my digital camera?

Posted on Jun 23, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

I want to know how to get a soft look on my pics I take with my digital camera. I am not a professional but I have seen people do this a lot. If you have jewelry on it seems to make it more shiny (standing out) in the pic. My profile pic is an example of what I am talking about.

There are several ways. My camera, a SONY, has a editing mode under the menu button that will change the image to soft focus. Most photo editing software have a soft focus mode. You can do it the old way, put a piece of stretched nylon fabric over the lens before you take the photo.

  2. Portrait mode.
I don't know about the jewlry thing though, it might be post-processing, like photoshop.

Don't do it in camera, even if you can.

You have much better control in post processing.

You need an image editing program.

The very best is Adobe Photoshop CS4, but it is very expensive.

A more sensible choice might be Photoshop Elements (current version is 7), which is Photoshop's smaller cousin - can't do all the same things, but it is much cheaper and perfectly adequate for most people.

Another editing program you can get is the Gimp (free and legal). It isn't pretty, has a big learning curve, but is a great program. http://www.gimp.org/

Or you can go to these free websites: http://www.picnik.com or http://www.picture2life.com/ or http://fotoflexer.com/ or http://www.sumopaint.com/

The last one is your best bet for more complicated tasks.

  4. Easy
The old style way using the camera is to stretch a nylon stocking over the lens. On a compact digital camera, just stretch it over the front or the entire camera.

On SLR cameras, photographers used either a soft focus lens filter or smeared Vasoline over a clear lens filter (messy).

The nylon stocking or a section of cheese cloth works well.

You give no indication as to which brand or model of digital camera you have. There are literally thousands of them, many of which do have settings on the menu for exactly that. A soft focus portrait.
