Bit of a silly question really!.. You can do street photography with ANY camera!.

Ideally you do not want a huge lens on the front and your DSLR hanging around your neck, these are certainly not ideals for street photography but they will of course still give excellent results.

The ideal camera to use is a small SLR, DSLR or rangefinder with a small lens (I use either a Canon A-1 with 50mm lens, an Olympus XA2 or a Ricoh 500 GX). Rangefinders are my personal preference, you may not feel the same way.

Your Nikon FM would make a better street photography camera and is far less conspicuous, easier to carry and will produce superb results. Your D300 will of course also work well but will easily attract attention.

  3. I understand what you mean, street photography is like any other though. But having a big DSLR defeats the purpose, in most cases. Anyone answering any different doesn’t really "get" street photography. You need a camera that’s small, light, and inconspicuous. I’ve wanted to shoot street for a while, but always felt as though I stuck out like a sore thumb carrying around my nikon D80, even as small as it was compared to the 5D my friend uses. So I went out on a limb and got a new, smaller camera - the olympus E-P1, a micro-4/3 digital camera. It’s basically a compact camera with a 4/3 sensor, which works well for being inconspicuous. We’d recently done a shoot at our city botanical garden, and where he’d set up his tripod and long macro lens (which basically disrupted traffic and called attention to himself), I just snapped about.

In terms of street photography, especially where candid shooting is concerned, having a small camera is nice. That is why I suspect using your FM was good, being that it’s a small SLR. But film has gone the way of the dodo, for most people, so to find a DSLR that can be as convenient is hard (considering they aren’t as small as their 35mm predecessors). Ultimately, I disagree that any DSLR can be used for street photography, and had been my quandary. People see a DSLR being raised to someone’s eye and they instantly know what’s going on - which ruins the grit and spontaneity of the intended shot. I like my new camera because it’s smaller and less obvious. It’s very reminiscent of a the old rangefinders, being the perferred choice of most street photographers and photojournalists for years, only mine is digital and not a rangefinder.

Anyway, that would be my suggestion. Check it out, it’s worth consideration. I love it.
