Which is a better buy: Canon Digital Rebel XS or Nikon D3000?

I know a lot about photography from being a cinematographer, but I don’t want to spend more than $700 on a camera just yet. I’ve looked at both cameras, but having never handled them, I can’t make a real decision. Which do you prefer and why?

for SLR cameras nikon is usually better. canon specializes in digital cameras.

Are you sure you meant the D3000 and not the D5000? The D5000 competes with the Rebel XS. Here is a side by side comparison.
