Are there adapters for digital RCA connectors (red, blue, green) to standard composite (white, red, yellow)?
Posted on Sep 01, 2009 under Digital news and reports |Well, I’ve been looking for a new TV to buy since mine has finally given out. I only have about $300 to spend. Most of the TVs that I like in this price range seem to only have the digital RCA connectors (the red, blue, and green ones). But I have some devices (video game consoles, DVD players) that use the standard composite/analog cables (red, white, and yellow) and I’d like to use those with this new TV.
Now, I’ve tried doing some searching for converters/adapters but I think my terminology might be a little wrong or something. I don’t really know, but I can’t really find what I’m looking for (if it even exists). But, I’ve talked to a friend and he says he has some.
So, can anybody help me find a way to use devices with composite/analog cables or connectors on a TV that only has digital connectors? Mainly some type of adapter/converter?
Here’s a link to the wiki page on RCA connectors which might help you understand what I’m asking. Please help!

The Red/Blue/Green are the different color pixels that show up on the screen. They are only video signal.
The Yellow/White/Red are video and audio. The Yellow, as you mention, is a composite of the Video signal. The White and Red are audio (left and right).
What you are looking for is a composite (the yellow cable) to component (Red/Blue/Green). I’m not sure if such a thing exists. If it does, I’d suspect it would be more than just a simple cable as it would actually have to convert from one form of video to another.
You’re best bet is probably to go to a local Radio Shack and see if they have something that’ll do this. Make sure you tell them you need to convert composite into component. If might help if you bring in a picture of what the connectors look like on the TV and device to make sure they know what you are talking about.

If I understand the question you are concerned about having a yellow (composite video) and red/white (analog stereo audio) RCA jacks, not just red/green/blue component video. You shouldn’t need an adapter.
Because of gradual evolution of connection technology most TVs (and other A/V components) have more than one type of input and it would be unusual for a TV to have only component and no composite video (both are normal … and possibly S-video as well). HDTVs will also have HDMI connectors. Composite (yellow RCA) is the lowest common denominator … it gives the worst quality image, BUT is almost universal since if nothing else source devices (e.g. DVD players, game consols, even Blu-ray players) almost always have a composite output.
I suggest you look at TVs again. it should not be hard to find one with both composite and component video inputs.
As for red/white audio … this is again fairly standard. Keep looking.
Even if the TV only has one composite and one red/white audio input you can buy external switch boxes relatively cheaply that allow multiple inputs to be connected to one device and selected with a switch (See link for one such device).
