The only surround sound that a TV will output via optical cable is stuff it gets through the antenna. In other words, you can’t plug your cable box, PS3, etc. into the TV with HDMI cables and expect to pass the surround sound audio out from the TV. In order to get surround sound from such external devices you must send the audio directly from those devices to your surround sound system.
I have done what your trying to do with the newer samsungs. If you hook a device It should pass the audio out through optical. It should be plug and play you shouldn’t have to set anything up.
