Would A Poor Quality Digital Camera Do This?

I am wondering because i have noticed that any picture of me, taken by a cellphone camera, seems to show a total lack of detail in my hair. My hair is very blond and it just seems to look like one solid mass. It is very odd.
So, do low quality cameras have trouble picking up detail in of lightly colored things?

Yes. Cell phone cameras are generally crappy.

Were the pictures taken indoors or outside? Loss of low contrast detail often occurs at higher ISO. The effect will be worse in cameras with smaller sensors or are not so good, but even very good cameras can suffer from this in low light and high ISO. Cellphone cameras tend to turn up ISO automatically in dim light.

It’s not an issue of poor quality per se. Cameras in cellphones and media players are essentially pinhole cameras. Pinhole cameras capture a softer image, which will lack detail and offer a different color balance and saturation than traditional cameras. This is due to longer shutter speeds than typical snapshots. For example, a normal P&S may snap a picture at a 1/250 sec shutter speed, while your camera-phone is using a 1/50 sec shutter speed. 1/50 of a second is still very fast, in photography terms, it’s slow. Quite slow. As for being low quality, the image sensors used in many camera phones is comparable, and sometimes identical, to those used in compact P&S cameras. It’s the lens that is cheaper and the way the camera processes the shot. If you were looking for that effect, you would need a more expensive camera capable of manually adjustments, instead of moderately priced P&S.
