We would like to record a TV program while we are at work. The TV is turned off when we leave but the recorder and converter box is left on. It will record for up to 12 hrs, but the converter box turns off after 4 hrs. Can we change this on the converter box - to stay on longer?

A signal sent to a digital converter sends a signal back to the satellite. These signals are records of what you watched how long you watched it and very likely other more "sensitive" info. PPV, On Demand and program guides are evident of this. These same things happens with cell phones.
(cell phones have been proven to still transmit data and personal conversations while not in use or turned off anyone who was with Cingular noticed that when they switched to AT&T the company name on the display changed from Cingular to AT&T meaning the displays are not pre-programed )
The habits and patterns of the people are being recorded and will be used at a later date.
What do you think this information will be used for? marketing or something far more sinister?
I don’t exactly have very good experiences in my opinion to count as extracurricular activities for digital design or art related stuff.
I’ve visited art museums, gone to live plays, and had to go to a ceramic studio but many of those were required for the classes…
I was thinking that maybe I could just do some volunteer work like help the homeless and things like that. Would that suffice for "extracurricular activity" for a digital design BFA?
