Which digital SLR camera should I get?
Posted on Oct 02, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I was so ready to buy the Nikon D60 until I found out it didnt have live view mode, same goes for the D3000.
So, I dont know what camera to get now.
I take a lot of action pics like of baseball/hockey games
I pretty much want a camera with the features that the D3000 has but with the live view
What camera do you recondmend?

If you want Live View feature I would suggest get step up model of them, D5000 which also come with better features

if that over your budget Canon Rebel XS is a good choice, close features with D60 and have live view

I own and recommend the Canon Rebel XS (1000D). Here’s some of the reasons why.

If you must have live view (I think it is over rated) then consider the Canon XS ($479.00) or the Sony A330 ($489.00). Sony has the best implementation of live view of any manufacturer because they use a second sensor just for this purpose. If you are going to do a lot of action shots, I doubt you will be using live view much because this feature slows down the photo taking process (mirror flipping back and forth) No self respecting professional photographer would use live view over the viewfinder.
If I were you, I would stick with Nikon D3000 kit ($529.00) with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens is probably the best value and the most bang for the buck DSLR from Nikon or in fact any other manufacturer. The D3000 is a easy camera for a beginner to learn and use (has a nice guide feature), not to mention it just came out on the market so it will hold its resale value pretty well. Also, the D3000 kit lens has (VR) vibration reduction technology, thus making the D3000 an even better value.
The Nikon D40 which is better than the D40x or the D60, (in the process of being discontinued because it was first introduced in 2006) is also a nice camera, but for just a little more ($472.00 vs. $529.00) you get second generation technology with a nice big 3" LCD screen and VR lens.
One of the main reasons I prefer the Nikon’s over the Canon’s and Sony’s is that they have a separate auto focus assist lamp built into the body (on all models) whereas the Canon and Sony use their flash to perform this function. In certain situations, using the flash as a AF assist lamp can interfere with your shot. I am surprised that Canon and Sony still use flash for AF assist on their lower end models because on their upper end models they have separate AF assist lamps.
Later, if you decide to use older 35mm film lenses, the thing you have to remember about using older 35mm lenses with the D3000 is that you have to multiply the focal lenght by 1.5 because the sensor is smaller than the original 35mm film. What this means is that a 18-200mm lens on the D3000 would become a 27-300mm lens and a 50mm lens would become a 75mm lens. Check out the last link a compatibility chart of Nikon lenses and bodies.
