Is there a digital camera my 35mm canon lenses will attach to? Please email any questions mhr1217@gmail.com?

Posted on Oct 06, 2009 under Digital news and reports |

The three lenses I own are all Canon and manual focus. I use them with a Canon A-1 (a 35mm film camera). I love film, but I would also like a digital option, without having to purchase all new lenses. The three lenses I own are:

1) Canon Zoom Lens FD 70-210mm 1:4 [This is my telescopic]

2) Canon Zoom Lens FD 28-55mm 1:3.5-4.5

3) Canon Lens FD 50mm 1:1.4

Please help! I really want a digital camera compatible with these lenses!

Your lenses are the old FD mount lenses and the new digital Canon’s are EF/EF-S mount. The only way to use your FD mount lenses on newer digital Canon models is to use an adapter. Take a look at the links below for adapters and for more info on Canon lens mounts.

  2. Unfortunately, no. When Canon introduced their auto focus cameras, the EOS Rebel line in 1989, they changed their lens mount to the EF mount.

Although you can buy an adapter to use your FD mount lenses on a Canon DSLR, you will lose approximately 1 stop and gain a 1.3x teleconverter effect. Since the Canon "cropped sensor" DSLR already adds a 1.6 crop factor your 50mm lens, for instance, would have the angle of view of a 104mm lens (50 x 1.3 x 1.6) and perform like an f2.0 lens. Your 70-210mm zoom becomes an equivalent 145.6-436.8mm and become an f5.6 lens.

So you can either sell off your film equipment and buy a Canon DSLR with the standard kit lens or keep the A-1 and lenses, buy a DSLR and shoot film and digital.

The lumix G cameras (such as the G1) will apparently accept your old canon lenses (with an adapter). The adapter does not need a corrective lens (thereby preserving picture quality). These adapters sell for between $75-$175. The G1 sells for about 7 or 8 hundred dollars (U.S.)

As I’m sure you already know, canon digital bodies will only accept your old lenses with an adapter. If the adapter has glass, it will usually degrade the picture**, if the adapter has no glass, they you will not be able to use it normally (you can only use it as macro and will not be able to focus to infinity).

**I also have a bunch of manual focus lenses from canon. I also have an adapter (with glass). I’ve used them on a digital camera body (the D30), and I’ve found that when the aperture is small, the picture quality can be very good (sometimes even better than the crappy canon EF zoom lens I have). However if the aperture is wide open, the pictures come out with this weird hazy glow, or sometimes overexposed. So I would personally not recommend trying to mount your old lenses on a canon digital body unless you just wanted to experiment.
