Should I go with an older, more professional digital SLR (D100), or a newer entry level model (D3000)?
Posted on Oct 21, 2009 under Digital news and reports |I can afford to either get a used, more professional level digital SLR such as a Nikon D100, or a new entry level model such as a D3000. With the new one, I know I’m getting more mega pixels (10, I think) and the older one is maybe 6. However, though I’ve never held a D3000, a lot of the other entry level models I’ve held just don’t feel substantial. The D100 I use at work on the other hand, feels substantial and strong. Plus, with the D100 I can afford better lenses. Are the megapixels and other features on the newer model worth it? The D3000 is lighter, but doesn’t that mean it’s less tough. I plan on taking this thing everywhere, including the rocky mountains. Less weight it nice, but I want it to be tough also. Thanks.

Both are decent cameras, and if you can get more lenses buy buying the D100, I would totally go with that simply because i love Nikon lenses and for the everyday user anything much past 6MP is wasted, since about 6.3MP is the equivilent enlargement wise as 35MM. However good a DSLR is though, it is only as good as the glass it is behind. Get the D100, take the money you save, and totally get some awesome lenses to play with in the rockys. My suggestion? an 18-55, a short wide angle (even a fish-eye if you get a decent deal), and moderate tele (I love my 55-300 AF/VR Nikor…its what lives on my D3X in the bag).

If I were you I would go with new D3000. Nikon D100 is good but it is an old model and with D3000 you can take good shot with it.

Out of the two I would suggest the D3000, but you can also find a D70 or D80 at your price range, and it will outdo both.
